Submitter Name: Let’s Go Railfanning (Ian and Rob Thaeler)
Site Name: Duncannon Station
Address: 1 Water Street, Duncannon, PA
Description: The site is the former Pennsylvania Railroad Duncannon Depot. It is now private property occupied by an internet service provider. The property owner allows railfans to use the picnic tables to the rear of the property to watch the trains.
Railway Companies: Norfolk Southern / Amtrak
District: Pittsburgh Line / NS Pittsburgh Division
Approx. Number of Trains / Day: Up to 40
Appealing Aspects: Great views in all directions – both track approaches feature slight curves. The Susquehanna River can be viewed beyond the tracks, and the NS Buffalo Line can sort of be seen on the opposite shoreline of the River. Facing east toward the track so the light is generally good for afternoon photography. Close to two defect detectors as well as Harrisburg Dispatch so train information can be heard on the scanner. Trains generally run at track speed through the area, although trains occasionally are held near the station to manage train traffic.
Significant Junctions / Yards / Stations: The closest are in Harrisburg, including NS Enola Yard, NS Rutherford Yard, NS Harrisburg Yard, and Harrisburg Station (Amtrak).
Milepost: 119
Scanner Frequencies: NS Road – AAR 50 – 160.860; NS Road – AAR 58 -160.980. The NS Road Channel switches from Harrisburg Road to Altoona East Road at Duncannon.
Restaurants: Sorrento Pizza – We’ve not eaten there, but it is highly rated on Google Maps. We’ve decided to get takeout there next time we’re in town.
